The Karnataka Department for Electronics, IT, BT, and Science & Technology has announced a pioneering Centre of Excellence (CoE) in FinTech. This initiative is in collaboration with NSRCEL at IIM Bangalore. The government order dated October 19 outlines the CoE's mission to boost FinTech growth in Karnataka by leveraging its entrepreneurial ecosystem, fostering innovation, and offering extensive support to startups in the financial technology sector.

Financial Allocation and Programme Details
An estimated budget of Rs 13.24 crore has been earmarked for the CoE's operations over five years. Of this, Rs 8.19 crore is designated for incubation and acceleration programmes, while Rs 5.04 crore will fund skilling and training initiatives. The Nadathur S Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL), a non-profit business incubator at IIM Bangalore, will lead the CoE as the Implementing Agency.
The CoE aims to drive FinTech innovation through startup incubation, acceleration, skill development programmes, and sandbox environments for real-world testing. These include regulatory sandboxes and certification programmes. The Karnataka Innovation & Technology Society (KITS), under the Department of Electronics, IT, BT, and S&T, Government of Karnataka, is providing financial backing for this initiative.
Strategic Importance and Vision
Priyank Kharge, Minister for Information Technology and Biotechnology, emphasised that Karnataka's tech ecosystem is advancing significantly by nurturing innovation and entrepreneurship in financial technology. "This Centre of Excellence represents a crucial step in establishing Karnataka as the FinTech capital of India," he stated. By leveraging IIM Bangalore's expertise alongside comprehensive startup support, the aim is to accelerate FinTech ventures' growth and develop a skilled workforce ready for a digital economy.
Kharge expressed confidence that investing in finance's future through this partnership will yield innovative solutions propelling both state and nation forward. The establishment of the Centre of Excellence in FinTech marks a significant step in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in Karnataka. It reinforces its position as a leader in financial technology while supporting the state's broader digital economy goals.
