Cochin Shipyard Lays Keel for Hybrid-Electric Vessel Supporting Pelagic Wind Services' Renewable Energy Goals

The Cochin Shipyard Ltd has initiated the construction of a modern Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (CSOV), as announced on Friday. This vessel is one of two being built for Pelagic Wind Services Ltd, a company based in Cyprus. The keel-laying ceremony for the vessel, named Pelagic Walu, was held on December 12.

Present at the ceremony were Andre Groenweld, CEO of Pelagic Wind Services Ltd, Sreejith K N, Director Operations, and Harikrishnan S, Executive Director Shipbuilding. Senior officials from CSL and the foreign company also attended. Representatives from Classification Society DNV and other stakeholders were present as well.

Hybrid-Electric Vessel Features

The hybrid-electric vessel includes a substantial 2800 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This feature aims to boost operational efficiency while reducing emissions. CSL mentioned that the vessel is also designed for future methanol fuel operations, highlighting its role in promoting renewable energy.

With these advancements, the vessel is positioned as a crucial asset in furthering the renewable energy sector. It plays a significant role in meeting global sustainable energy objectives, according to CSL.

Design and Specifications

The vessel measures 93 meters in length and 19.5 meters in breadth. It is based on the Kongsberg UT 5520 MH design, which prioritises safety, operability, seakeeping performance, and reduced fuel consumption.

This design allows the vessel to accommodate up to 120 personnel, including wind farm technicians. It also meets DNV comfort class notations, ensuring a comfortable environment for those on board.
