Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared insights on effective leadership at the SOUL Leadership conclave. He emphasised the importance of identifying potential pitfalls early in the planning stages to strengthen decision-making processes. Vaishnaw highlighted how this approach significantly impacted his role in launching the Vande Bharat project, which he described as transformative in his career.

Vaishnaw, who oversees Railways, IT, and Information and Broadcasting, stressed the necessity of maintaining focus and avoiding distractions. He believes that effective leadership involves leading from the front. "We have to train ourselves to focus on that one thing which is most important to achieve in the present," he stated during his address.
Focus and Leadership
The minister advised young leaders to be aware of potential project failures to identify gaps early. This foresight, he explained, contributes to robust decision-making and execution. "This thinking makes your entire decision-making very robust as you realise problems," he noted, sharing his experiences with the audience.
During a Q&A session, Vaishnaw was asked whether today's generation should lead from the front or behind. He firmly responded, "There is no other way to lead, you have to lead from the front." He recounted his experience during a train accident in June 2023, where he spent four days on-site ensuring effective role distribution and task completion.
Adapting Rules for Progress
When discussing differences between bureaucratic and political roles, Vaishnaw highlighted the broader scope available in politics. "The biggest advantage in political life is that the canvas is broad," he said. Bureaucrats operate within existing rules, while political leaders can create new ones when necessary.
He cited the telecom sector as an example where outdated laws from 1885 were replaced with a modern Telecom Act. This change was crucial for advancing the sector into a new era. Vaishnaw's insights underscored the importance of adaptability and forward-thinking in leadership roles.
Vaishnaw also advised maintaining a calm and focused mind while being compassionate and connected with others. These qualities are essential for effective leadership and achieving one's full potential.
The minister concluded by encouraging young leaders to harness their minds' capabilities by eliminating distractions and concentrating on their goals. This approach, he believes, will enable them to maximise their potential and succeed in challenging tasks.
