The Kerala government has approved a significant project to boost industrial and economic growth in the state's southern region. Finance Minister K N Balagopal announced on Tuesday that the Vizhinjam-Kollam-Punalur Industrial and Economic Growth Triangle will be executed through the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). This initiative aims to leverage the potential of Vizhinjam port, India's largest upcoming transshipment port, to benefit Kerala.

The project covers 1,456 square kilometres across Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram districts, focusing on the Vizhinjam port. The government intends to create an industrial zone featuring growth triangles, nodes, sub-nodes, and corridors. These will integrate transport, logistics, and industrial parks to develop a smart industrial ecosystem. The initiative seeks to enable these areas to compete globally by capitalising on their unique characteristics.
Focus on Infrastructure Development
Balagopal highlighted that the project's scope extends beyond South Kerala's economic growth. It aims for comprehensive development by connecting coastal areas, central regions, and hilly terrains through key road and rail networks. This integration is expected to foster overall progress in Kerala by establishing a robust industrial corridor.
The Vizhinjam-Kollam-Punalur development corridor is a pivotal move towards transforming South Kerala into an industrial and economic hub. By doing so, it aims to elevate the state into a port-based economy. The project envisions creating a competitive environment for industries located near major highways and rail networks.
Strategic Vision for Economic Transformation
The Finance Minister emphasised that the project is designed to harness the potential of the Vizhinjam port. This strategic vision is intended to drive economic transformation in the region. The development corridor is seen as a crucial step in achieving this goal, with an emphasis on integrating various geographical areas into a cohesive industrial framework.
During a press conference held as part of KIIFB project announcements, Balagopal stated that the initiative aims to develop an industrial ecosystem capable of competing globally. The focus is on creating growth nodes and corridors that combine transport, logistics, and industrial parks.
This ambitious project reflects the government's commitment to fostering economic growth in Kerala. By leveraging infrastructure investments and strategic planning, it seeks to transform the southern region into a vibrant industrial hub.
