Tax on Pooja Bumper Lottery Prize
Lottery winnings in India are fully taxable, and the same rules apply to the Pooja Bumper lottery prize. Under the Income Tax Act, Section 115BB and Section 194B govern how lottery income is taxed. Any amount won through a lottery is classified as "Income from Other Sources" and is charged a flat tax rate of 30%, regardless of your income bracket.
In addition to the 30% base tax, a 4% health and education cess is levied, which takes the effective tax rate to 31.2%. For winnings exceeding Rs. 10 lakh, an additional 10% surcharge becomes applicable, increasing the tax outflow even further. Since lottery income does not qualify for deductions, exemptions, or tax-saving benefits, the entire prize amount is taxed without any relief.
For example, if a person wins the Pooja Bumper first prize of Rs. 12,00,00,000, the tax will be deducted at source (TDS) at 31.2%, and the winner will receive only the remaining net amount after TDS.
