A statewide public holiday will be observed today in Kerala, as the state government has announced a holiday on Tuesday, July 22, after the death of former Chief Minister of Kerala V.S. Who Was V.S. Achuthanandan?
At the age of 101, V.S. Achuthanandan passed away on Monday, July 21, at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. The former Kerala Chief Minister, who served from 2006 to 2011, was also a veteran leader, freedom fighter, and member of the Communist Party of India. He had been hospitalised at SUT Hospital, Pattom, since June 23 due to a heart attack and age-related complications.

What Will Be Closed on the Kerala Public Holiday Today?
As per the official notification, July 22 is a public holiday in Kerala for all state government offices, PSUs, schools, colleges, universities, autonomous bodies, and banks. Several university exams and college elections have been postponed due to the state mourning.

What is open in Kerala on July 22?

Milk delivery, newspaper distribution, and essential supply chains
Shops, markets, and retail stores will remain open unless local trader associations announce otherwise.
Public transport such as buses and autos may run on a limited or altered schedule.
Central Government Offices and Private Sector Status
Central government offices, railways, and banking headquarters may remain open unless specifically closed at a local level. Similarly, many private educational institutions and corporate offices will function normally unless informed otherwise.

Bank Holiday in Kerala Today
Banks in Kerala will be closed due to the public holiday announcement. Services like check clearance, in-person banking, and branch visits will also be unavailable. Customers are advised to use online banking, UPI, and ATM services during this period.
July 22 has now been added as an unscheduled holiday in the Kerala bank holidays list of July 2025 in tribute to the late CM.
