In a significant development aimed at enhancing the capacity of Kolkata airport, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has announced a collaboration with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) for the construction of a subway/underpass. This strategic infrastructure, spanning 90 metres, will bridge the VIP Road, linking the airport's operational zone with its residential colony. The project, with an estimated cost of Rs 229.43 crore, marks a pivotal step in optimizing land use and improving logistics within the airport's premises.

The underpass, measuring 90 metres in length, 15 metres in width, and 5.5 metres in height, is designed to run approximately three metres below the VIP Road. It will feature connecting ramps on both sides, facilitating seamless access between the airport's current operational area and its future extension. This extension is planned to house a cargo complex among other facilities, necessitating the relocation of existing cargo operations to accommodate new aircraft parking bays.
Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has been entrusted with the execution of this tunneling work, which is expected to reach completion within 15 months. The initiative is critical for Kolkata airport, as expanding beyond its current boundaries is not feasible due to severe land constraints.
Strategic Importance of the Underpass
The underpass is strategically positioned beneath the Metro tunnel entering the airport area from Kaikhali, ensuring minimal disruption to existing infrastructure. It is intended exclusively for use by airport stakeholders and entry pass holders, thus not affecting aircraft and passenger areas directly.
Upon completion, the current AAI residential colony will be transformed into an extended operational area for the airport. This move is essential for creating airside facilities capable of meeting future demands and optimizing land utilization at one of India's busiest airports.
This development comes at a crucial time when efficient logistics and optimal use of space are paramount for airports striving to accommodate growing traffic and operational needs. The subway/underpass project not only promises to enhance operational efficiency at Kolkata airport but also sets a precedent for similar infrastructure developments in constrained urban environments.
