Kotak Mahindra Bank and IIT Kanpur partner to establish a School of Sustainability, addressing global warming challenges through education, research, and outreach initiatives.

In a significant move towards promoting sustainability education and research, Kotak Mahindra Bank has joined hands with the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) to establish a fully integrated School of Sustainability. This initiative is part of Kotak Mahindra Bank's corporate social responsibility (CSR) program, demonstrating its commitment to addressing global warming and fostering sustainable development.
Promoting Pedigree Education, Research, and Outreach
The Kotak School of Sustainability aims to offer thought leadership solutions and prepare future generations to lead the cause of sustainable development. By bringing together various departments and centres of excellence at IIT Kanpur, the school will provide an enabling environment for collaborative research across multiple facets of sustainability.
Dedicated Centres of Excellence
The Kotak School of Sustainability will house dedicated centres of excellence covering diverse aspects such as clean energy, environment, ecology, circular economy, climate finance, sustainable societies, and policy. This multidisciplinary approach will enable students and researchers to explore sustainability from various perspectives and contribute to real-world solutions.
Funding and Infrastructure
Kotak Mahindra Bank has earmarked a substantial amount of Rs 200 crore for this project, with Rs 70 crore allocated for the first year. The school will be led by tenured professors and leading industry experts from across the globe. It will offer both undergraduate and postgraduate academic and skill-building programs on different themes of sustainability.
Admission and Green Building
Students can gain entry into the undergraduate courses at the school through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). The school will be housed in a green building on IIT Kanpur's main campus, designed to achieve net-zero practices in energy, water, and waste. This eco-friendly infrastructure aligns with the school's mission of promoting sustainable development.
Commitment to Sustainable Development
The Kotak School of Sustainability reflects Kotak Mahindra Bank's commitment to contributing to India's skilled workforce and achieving long-term sustainable development. The school will focus on enhancing home-grown capabilities to address sustainable development challenges and support India's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
Holistic Approach to Sustainability
Professor Ashish Garg, Professor-in-Charge of the School, emphasized the school's aim to excel in sustainability education, research, innovation, technology development, entrepreneurship, and outreach. The school will emphasize the synergistic integration of different aspects of sustainability to create a holistic approach that drives educational, scientific, technological, environmental, and social impact.
The partnership between Kotak Mahindra Bank and IIT Kanpur to establish the Kotak School of Sustainability is a significant step towards addressing global warming and promoting sustainable development in India. By combining academic excellence, industry expertise, and a commitment to sustainability, the school is poised to become a leading institution in the field, shaping future leaders and innovators who will drive positive change for a more sustainable future.
