Kottayam Port to Undergo Transformation for Enhanced Container Traffic

The state government of Kerala has announced plans to develop the Kottayam port to facilitate increased container traffic, leveraging the opportunities created by the opening of the Vizhinjam International Container Transshipment Terminal.

The Kerala state government plans to develop the Kottayam port to handle more container traffic, taking advantage of the opportunities created by the opening of the Vizhinjam International Container Transshipment Terminal in Thiruvananthapuram. This announcement was made by the state Ports Minister, V N Vasavan, during his recent visit to the Kottayam port and inland container terminal.

Efforts to Bring Kottayam Port Under Maritime Board

Minister Vasavan emphasized the importance of developing the Kottayam port to capitalize on the upcoming opportunities presented by the Vizhinjam International port. He mentioned plans to bring in more barges to increase container traffic. According to a recent market survey, the port has the potential to handle 1,000 to 2,000 containers per month.

Impressive Cargo Handling and Revenue Collection

Vasavan highlighted the port's achievements, stating that until December 2023, it handled a total of 5.54 lakh tonnes of goods worth Rs 621.09 crore. Additionally, customs revenue of Rs 81.28 crore was collected, along with a GST of Rs three crore.

Public-Private Partnership and Infrastructure Development

The state government holds a 49% stake in the Kottayam port, while the remaining 51% is owned by private individuals. Minister Vasavan also visited Kumarakom and Cheepunkal in the district as part of efforts to establish a water theme park. Kumarakom is being considered as a potential tourist destination, and the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative society will prepare the project estimate.
