Amid rising unrest from anti-immigration protests, Mayor Karen Bass declared a local emergency in Los Angeles, implementing a curfew to restore order. President Trump responded by deploying US Marines and National Guard troops, while local businesses face significant impacts from the chaos.
Amid rising unrest in Los Angeles due to anti-immigration protests, Mayor Karen Bass declared a local emergency. This decision came after looting and vandalism spread across the city. The curfew, effective from 8 pm on Tuesday to 6 am on Wednesday, aims to restore order. It does not apply to residents within the designated area, homeless individuals, credentialed media, or public safety personnel.

The curfew covers a 1 square mile area of downtown Los Angeles where protests have been ongoing since Friday. Mayor Bass highlighted that the situation reached a critical point after 23 businesses were looted. She also urged US President Donald Trump to halt immigration raids, emphasizing the need for peace and stability in the city.
Trump's Response and Military Deployment
In response to the escalating chaos, President Trump ordered hundreds of US Marines into Los Angeles. Additionally, he deployed around 4,000 National Guard troops despite opposition from California Governor Gavin Newsom. The governor argued that these deployments were unnecessary and politically motivated.
The National Guard has been granted authority to detain individuals who assault officers temporarily. However, actual arrests must be conducted by law enforcement agencies. Despite criticism, Trump insisted that military presence would continue until peace is restored in Los Angeles.
Impact on Local Businesses
The protests have severely impacted local businesses in Los Angeles. Looters targeted several stores, including Broadway Apple and Adidas outlets, as well as a jewellery store. The widespread theft and vandalism have added to the city's turmoil during these demonstrations.
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell stated that the curfew is vital for protecting lives and property amidst growing unrest. He clarified that it does not apply to certain groups such as residents within the designated area and emergency personnel.
Legal Challenges and Federal Involvement
California sought judicial intervention to limit federal deployment of state National Guard troops and US Marines amid protests. However, this request was denied by a federal judge. The legal challenge reflects ongoing tensions between state authorities and the federal government over handling the situation.
Mayor Bass expressed concerns about prolonged unrest in Los Angeles. She warned that the emergency measures might last several days as efforts continue to restore order in affected areas.
The situation in Los Angeles remains tense as authorities work towards stabilizing conditions following days of protest-related chaos. The focus remains on ensuring safety while addressing underlying issues fueling these demonstrations.
