Ending weeks of political speculation, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis is set to be sworn in as Maharashtra's chief minister for the third time. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Thursday at Mumbai's iconic Azad Maidan.
Unanimous Selection
At a key legislature party meeting held in Vidhan Bhawan on Wednesday, BJP's central observer and former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani announced Fadnavis' unanimous election as the leader of the BJP legislature party. Fadnavis, 54, thanked the BJP legislators for their trust in him, attributing the coalition's success to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's unifying mantra, "Ek hai toh safe hai" (Unity ensures safety).
BJP In Maharashtra
In the November 20 Maharashtra Assembly elections, the BJP achieved its best-ever performance in the state, winning 132 out of 288 seats. The BJP-led Mahayuti coalition, which includes the Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar's NCP, secured a commanding majority with 230 seats.

Devendra Fadnavis' Personal Wealth
Ahead of the elections, Fadnavis filed an affidavit detailing his assets and income. The document offers insight into the financial standing of the two-time chief minister:
Total Assets: Fadnavis declared movable and immovable assets worth Rs 13.27 crore.
Income Decline: His income in 2023-24 was Rs 79.3 lakh, down from Rs 92.48 lakh in the previous fiscal year.
Movable Assets: Fadnavis holds Rs 56.07 lakh in his name, Rs 6.96 crore in his wife Amruta Fadnavis' name, and Rs 10.22 lakh in his daughter's name. Cash in hand amounts to Rs 23,500 for him and Rs 10,000 for his wife. Bank deposits, including term deposits and cooperative society accounts, total Rs 2.28 lakh for him and Rs 1.43 lakh for his wife.
Investments: Fadnavis has invested Rs 20.70 lakh in National Savings Schemes (NSS), postal savings, insurance policies, and other financial instruments. Amruta Fadnavis, a banker, has Rs 5.62 crore invested in bonds, shares, and mutual funds.
Gold Holdings: Fadnavis owns 450 grams of gold worth Rs 32.85 lakh, while his wife possesses 900 grams valued at Rs 65.7 lakh.
Real Estate: Fadnavis owns properties worth Rs 4.69 crore, including agricultural land in Chandrapur and a residential property in Nagpur. His wife holds real estate assets worth Rs 95.29 lakh.
Liabilities: The affidavit shows Fadnavis owes no loans to financial institutions but has a Rs 62 lakh personal loan from his wife.
Political Implications of Fadnavis' Return
Fadnavis' return as chief minister comes after a period of political recalibration within the BJP and its alliance partners. His leadership is expected to bring stability and continuity to Maharashtra's governance, with a focus on delivering on the alliance's electoral promises.
The Mahayuti coalition's overwhelming majority provides a strong mandate for implementing key policy initiatives in infrastructure development, agriculture, and industrial growth.
