Maharashtra is in deep mourning after the tragic death of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash today near Pune District. A chartered aircraft carrying NCP leader and Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar crashed while attempting an emergency landing at Baramati airport. Ajit Pawar and four others lost their lives in the crash, including two pilots and two security personnel. Visuals from the crash site showed wreckage scattered across the runway, flames, and thick smoke of the severe accident.

Maharashtra Government Announces State Mourning
In response to the tragedy, the Maharashtra government announced three days of state mourning as a mark of respect to the late Deputy Chief Minister. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also declared a state holiday on Wednesday, January 28 following the confirmation of Ajit Pawar's death.
Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, CM Fadnavis said the loss was "irreparable for the entire state" and described Ajit Pawar as a hardworking and resilient leader who made big contributions to Maharashtra's development.

In a post on X, Maharashtra Chief Minister said, "Shri Ajit Ashatai Anantrao Pawar, Honourable Deputy Chief Minister, Government of Maharashtra, passed away today, January 28, 2026. As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, state mourning shall be observed throughout Maharashtra for three days."
All state government offices will remain closed as part of the official mourning. Additionally, no official entertainment programmes will be held during the three-day state mourning period.
Educational institutions across Maharashtra are also expected to remain closed. Citizens are advised to stay alert and check updates from district collectors, the education department, and individual bank branches for any local holiday declarations related to Ajit Pawar's last rites
Last Rites To Be Finalised After Family Consultation
CM Devendra Fadnavis said the decision regarding Ajit Pawar's last rites will be taken after consultation with the family. He confirmed that he and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde will travel to Baramati, where Pawar's mortal remains were taken.
