The digital payment environment in India is about to get even more user-friendly for UPI Lite users, thanks to two major updates scheduled to launch on November 1, 2024.
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has revolutionized the way transactions are conducted in India, achieving remarkable growth over the past few years. There has been a phenomenal rise in the adoption of digital payments among users across the nation. The introduction of UPI lite offers greater flexibility and convenience for users. UPI Lite is an online wallet where you can pay without the use of a UPI PIN and it doesn't require an e-KYC. UPI Lite is becoming an increasingly attractive option for those looking to make hassle-free transactions in their daily lives.

Introduction of Auto Top-Up Feature
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced the rollout of an auto top-up feature for UPI Lite likely to be effective from November 1st, allowing users to automate the fill up of their balance. This feature is designed to make the user experience more seamless by ensuring that the UPI Lite balance is automatically reloaded whenever it falls below a certain limit as set by the user. It allows users to make transactions under Rs.500 without needing to enter a PIN, helping in quick payments. Users can maintain a maximum UPI Lite balance of Rs. 2000 at any time, which can now be automatically reloaded.
Increased Transaction Limits for UPI Lite Users
In addition to the auto top-up feature, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced a hike in the transaction limits for UPI Lite. Previously, UPI Lite users could carry out transactions up to Rs.500 per transaction, with a maximum wallet balance capped at Rs.2,000. The cumulative maximum daily spend limit was set at Rs.4,000. However, under the new guidelines, the RBI will raise the maximum transaction limit to Rs.1,000 and increase the wallet balance limit to Rs.5,000. Moreover, since the balance is maintained with the user's bank, and the UPI Lite can be deleted at any moment, providing for an instant refund of the UPI Lite balance. Also there is no need for the usual pre-debit notification that is typically required for merchant mandate payments.
Revoking the Auto Top-Up Mandate
As per the update, one of the key features of the new auto top-up system is the ability for users to revoke the auto top-up mandate at any time through their Payment Service Provider (PSP) or app. This makes sure that users maintain control over their payment methods and can adjust their settings according to their preferences.
