India has reiterated its dedication to collaborating closely with the Maldives government to expedite the implementation of the Male to Thilafushi link project, a transformative infrastructure endeavor aimed at connecting the capital city of Male with Thilafushi island.
India has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Government of Maldives for the swift execution of the Male to Thilafushi link project, a landmark infrastructure initiative in the island nation. The project, also known as the Greater Male Connectivity Project (GMCP), is valued at USD 530 million and aims to establish a direct connection between the capital city of Male and Thilafushi, an island situated in the South Indian Ocean.

High-Level Meeting for Project Monitoring
A high-level meeting to monitor the progress of the India-assisted Male to Thilafushi link project was held in Male on Monday. The 10th Joint Project Monitoring Committee meeting of the GMCP focused on reviewing the project's status and addressing any challenges or concerns. The meeting was co-chaired by Abdulla Muththalib, Minister of Construction and Infrastructure of the Maldives, and Munu Mahawar, Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives.
India's Commitment to the Project
The High Commission of India in Maldives emphasized its unwavering commitment to collaborating closely with the Maldivian government to ensure the speedy implementation of this flagship development cooperation project. The project is being supported by highly concessional credit and a USD 100 million grant from India.
Project Details and Funding
The Male to Thilafushi link project involves the construction of a bridge or a tunnel to connect Male and Thilafushi. The project is being executed by Afcons Infrastructure Ltd, a subsidiary of the Indian conglomerate Shapoorji Pallonji Group. Funding for the project is being provided by the Exim Bank of India under the Indian grant and Line of Credit (LoC) scheme.
Significance of the Project
The successful completion of the Male to Thilafushi link project is expected to significantly enhance transportation and connectivity between the two islands. This will not only facilitate trade and economic activities but also open up new avenues for social and economic development in the region.
Project Amidst Changing Political Landscape
The meeting held on Monday assumes greater significance in light of the recent change of government in the Maldives. Following his election as President, Mohamed Muizzu, known for his pro-China stance, requested India to withdraw its military personnel from the country by March 15. Additionally, the new government is reviewing over 100 bilateral agreements signed with India by the previous administration.
Despite these political developments, India remains committed to its partnership with the Maldives and the successful implementation of the Male to Thilafushi link project. This project stands as a testament to India's ongoing support for the development and prosperity of its neighboring nation.
