The decision is expected to positively impact the jute industry, which has been facing challenges in recent years. It is estimated that around 4 lakh workers employed in jute mills and ancillary units, as well as approximately 40 lakh farm families, will benefit from this move. The reservation norms will protect the domestic production of raw jute and jute packaging material, thereby promoting self-reliance in line with the government's Aatmnirbhar Bharat initiative.
Environmental Benefits
In addition to supporting the jute industry, the mandatory packaging norms also align with India's sustainability goals. Jute is a natural, biodegradable, renewable, and reusable fiber that meets all sustainability parameters. By promoting the use of jute bags, the government aims to reduce the environmental impact associated with synthetic packaging materials.
Jute's Role in Foodgrain Packaging
The jute industry primarily produces jute sacking bags, with around 75% of its total production dedicated to this purpose. Of these bags, 85% are supplied to the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and State Procurement Agencies, while the remaining are exported or sold directly. The central government procures jute sacking bags worth approximately Rs 12,000 crore annually for packing foodgrains, ensuring a guaranteed market for jute farmers and workers.
