Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has achieved a remarkable feat by handling the highest number of passengers in December 2023. With 2.03 lakh travelers and a single-day record of 7,548 passengers on New Years Eve, MIA is experiencing a substantial increase in aviation travel. This growth is attributed to the airports strategic location and the increasing demand for both domestic and international travel.
The Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has achieved a significant milestone by handling the highest number of passengers in December 2023 since the commencement of its commercial operations on October 31, 2020. The airport witnessed an impressive footfall of 2.03 lakh travellers, surpassing the previous record set in November 2023 when it handled 1.78 lakh passengers.
New Year's Eve Passenger Traffic
On December 31, 2023, MIA set a new single-day passenger handling record by serving 7,548 passengers, surpassing the previous mark of 7,468 passengers handled on November 25, 2023. This remarkable achievement was driven by the increased travel demand during the holiday season, particularly during weekends.
Weekend Travel Surge
The airport experienced a significant surge in passenger traffic during the weekends of December 9-10, 16-17, 23-25, and 30-31. The highest footfall was recorded on New Year's Eve, with 7,548 passengers passing through the airport. The airport also witnessed substantial passenger traffic in the days leading up to Christmas, with 7,089, 7,220, and 7,034 passengers handled on December 23, 24, and 25, respectively.
Increased Air Traffic Movements
The upswing in passenger traffic at MIA is attributed to the general increase in air traffic movements (ATMs) observed since October 29, 2023, when the winter schedule came into effect. In December 2023, the airport recorded 1,388 ATMs, including 1,096 domestic movements. This surge in air travel reflects the growing demand for both business and leisure travel.
Connectivity and Growth
Currently, MIA provides connectivity to nine domestic and seven international destinations, catering to the diverse travel needs of passengers. The airport's strategic location and expanding network have contributed to the steady increase in footfalls. The airlines operating at MIA, including Air India, Air India Express, and IndiGo, have played a crucial role in facilitating this growth.
The record-breaking passenger traffic at Mangaluru International Airport in December 2023 underscores the growing importance of air travel in the region. MIA's commitment to providing efficient and seamless services has positioned it as a key player in the aviation industry. As the demand for air travel continues to rise, the airport is well-equipped to meet the evolving needs of passengers and contribute to the overall growth of the aviation sector in India.
