Meta Contributes USD 1 Million to Donald Trump's Inauguration Fund Amid Changing Relations

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has contributed USD 1 million to President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration fund. This donation was confirmed by a Meta spokesperson and initially reported by The Wall Street Journal. The contribution follows a private meeting between Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Trump at Mar-a-Lago.

Meta's Relationship with Trump

Stephen Miller, appointed as deputy chief of staff for Trump's upcoming term, mentioned that Zuckerberg, like other business leaders, aims to support Trump's economic initiatives. Zuckerberg has been working to improve his company's image among conservatives after a strained relationship with Trump. Following the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack, Trump was banned from Facebook but had his account reinstated in early 2023.

During the 2024 campaign, Zuckerberg did not endorse any presidential candidate but expressed a more favourable view of Trump. Earlier this year, he commended Trump's handling of an assassination attempt. Despite this, Trump continued to criticise Zuckerberg publicly during the campaign.

Corporate Donations to Inaugurals

Corporations have historically been significant contributors to presidential inaugurations. However, in 2009, then-President-elect Barack Obama declined corporate donations for his inaugural but accepted them for his second in 2013. Facebook did not contribute to either Joe Biden's 2021 inaugural or Trump's 2017 inaugural.

Google donated USD 285,000 each to Trump's first inaugural and Biden's inaugural, as per Federal Election Commission records. Inaugural committees must disclose their fundraising sources but not their spending details. Microsoft contributed USD 1 million to Obama's second inaugural but only USD 500,000 to both Trump in 2017 and Biden in 2021.

Despite Zuckerberg's efforts to mend ties with Trump, the former president has continued his public attacks. In July, Trump posted on Truth Social, threatening election fraudsters and using a nickname for Zuckerberg: "ZUCKERBUCKS, be careful!" This reflects ongoing tensions despite recent interactions between the two figures.

The dynamics between Meta and political figures highlight the complex relationship between technology companies and politics. As corporations navigate these waters, their contributions and interactions remain under scrutiny from both the public and political entities.
