Meta has announced a new feature allowing some Facebook users to access eBay listings through its Marketplace service. This move is part of an effort to address European Union allegations of anticompetitive behaviour. The trial will enable users in Germany, France, and the US to browse eBay listings on Marketplace, though purchases will still be completed on eBay.

The European Union had previously fined Meta nearly 800 million euros ($824 million) for what it described as "abusive practices" related to Marketplace. The EU accused Meta of unfairly limiting competition by linking Marketplace to its social network, automatically exposing Facebook users to the service. Additionally, concerns were raised about Meta gaining an advantage through advertising data.
eBay Listings Integration
eBay has confirmed that starting Wednesday, a "select number of eBay listings" from various categories will be available on Facebook Marketplace in the three countries. These categories are chosen based on factors like shopping trends and listing quality. However, specific details about the categories have not been disclosed.
Meta stated in a blog post, "While we disagree with and continue to appeal the European Commission's decision on Facebook Marketplace, we are working quickly and constructively to build a solution which addresses the points raised." The company believes this solution could benefit users on both platforms.
European Commission's Stance
The European Commission, responsible for enforcing antitrust laws across the 27-nation bloc, has not provided specific comments on Meta's new initiative. However, it reiterated that Meta must comply with the decision made in mid-November within 90 days.
Shares of eBay saw an increase following the announcement. Buyers using this new integration will follow the same purchasing process as they would directly on eBay's website. They will also receive protections such as eBay's money-back guarantee.
This development marks a significant step in Meta's efforts to address regulatory concerns while enhancing user experience across its platforms. By integrating eBay listings into Facebook Marketplace, Meta aims to provide a seamless browsing experience for users while adhering to EU regulations.
