In a recent development, Meta's Oversight Board has opened the floor for public comments regarding the handling of AI-generated explicit images that involve public figures from India and the US. This move comes in light of two specific incidents that have raised concerns about content moderation on platforms like Instagram and Facebook.

The first case under scrutiny involves an AI-generated image of a nude woman, designed to resemble a well-known public figure from India, shared on Instagram. The account responsible for this post is known for distributing AI-generated images targeting Indian women. This incident has sparked a significant reaction, primarily from users in India, highlighting the growing issue of deepfakes in the country.
Despite the Ministry of Electronics and IT's directive to social media entities to eliminate AI-generated fake visuals and videos, such instances persist. High-profile Indian celebrities like Rashmika Mandanna and Priyanka Chopra Jonas have been victims of viral fake images and videos across social media platforms.
In response to a user's report categorizing the contentious content as pornography, Meta initially did not review the complaint within the stipulated 48-hour window, leading to an automatic closure of the report. However, upon appeal to the Oversight Board, Meta acknowledged an oversight in its initial decision to retain the content, subsequently removing it for infringing upon its bullying and harassment community standards.
According to IT regulations established in 2021, online platforms are mandated to remove content depicting full or partial nudity within 24 hours upon receipt of a complaint.
The second case involves an AI-generated obscene image of an American celebrity posted within a Facebook group. Unlike the first case, this image was promptly identified as a breach of Facebook's Community Standards and was removed. The board has now called for public input on this matter, with the comment period set to close on April 30.
While the Oversight Board refrained from disclosing the identities or specifics of the celebrities involved, it shared a news article link that mentions the names of those affected by such content.
This initiative by Meta's Oversight Board to solicit public feedback marks a significant step towards addressing the challenges posed by AI-generated content. It underscores the ongoing efforts to refine content moderation practices in response to evolving digital landscapes and regulatory requirements.
