A recent incident on an Air India Bengaluru-San Francisco flight has brought to light a concerning safety issue when a passenger discovered a blade-like metal piece in their meal. The airline has since issued an apology, attributing the foreign object to a malfunction in the vegetable processing machine at the facilities of its catering partner, TajSATS. This event marks the second occurrence of questionable food safety on the airline's long-haul flights in recent times, raising concerns about onboard meal quality and passenger safety.

Mathures Paul, a journalist and the passenger who encountered the metal piece, shared his experience on X, stating that he felt the object only after chewing his meal for a few seconds. Fortunately, he was not harmed. Paul expressed his concerns over the potential danger such an incident could pose, especially if it involved a child. The discovery has sparked a debate on the standards of Air India's catering services and its implications for the airline's reputation.
Air India and TajSATS, both entities under the Tata Group conglomerate, have taken this incident seriously. Rajesh Dogra, Air India's Chief Customer Experience Officer, confirmed that an investigation traced the metal piece back to a vegetable processing machine used by TajSATS. Measures are being implemented to prevent future occurrences, including more frequent checks of processing equipment and enhanced inspection protocols.
In response to this incident and a previous complaint involving uncooked food and unclean seats on a New Delhi-Newark flight, Air India has engaged directly with affected customers to offer apologies and reassurances of improved service quality. A spokesperson from TajSATS also confirmed that steps have been taken to strengthen inspection processes and preventive maintenance routines for all production equipment.
