Following the multi-decade-old tradition, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will conduct the Muhurat Trading 2025 on Diwali, October 21.

What is Muhurat Trading?
Muhurat Trading is a special one-hour session held every year on the day of Diwali, when traders and investors participate in token purchases as a gesture to invite prosperity and good luck for the year ahead. However, regular trading in the stock market remains closed on the day of Diwali.
Muhurat Trading was first introduced by the Bombay Stock Exchange in 1957 during Diwali. Later on, this practice was also adopted by the National Stock Exchange, which started its first Muhurat Trading in 1992. Ever since, it has become an important annual ritual for both the exchanges.
Diwali Muhurat Trading 2025 Schedule
This year, the Muhurat Trading session will be held in the afternoon instead of the usual evening slot. According to the circular shared by NSE, Muhurat trading in 2025 will be held on October 21st, 2025. From 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm. The pre-opening session will begin at 1:30 pm, while the trade modification window ends at 2:55 pm.
The segments covered during the Muhray trading in 2025 include equity, commodity derivatives, currency derivatives, equity futures & options, and securities lending & borrowing (SLB).
Importance of Muhurat Trading
Muhurat Trading is an old tradition in India, especially among investors and traders. It is mainly held in honour of Goddess Lakshmi, who is considered the goddess of wealth and prosperity. During this special one-hour session, many investors make token or small symbolic purchases, which leads to more market activity or price movement than usual because of these token trades.
This year, on October 21st, the session will be conducted to celebrate Diwali and the start of the Hindu New Year, Samvat 2082.
Even though Muhurat Trading is more about tradition than making profits, if we look at the previous year's records, the stock market often ends the session in the green with profits to investors. However, as per experts, long-term investment decisions should not be made based on this short session.
Previous Year's Sensex & Nifty Performance
During the Muhurat trading session in 2024, which was held on November 1, both Sensex and Nifty ended positively. The Sensex closed up by 335.06 points, or 0.42%, at 79,724.12, while the Nifty rose 94 points, or about 0.41%, to 24,304.30.
This year both the benchmarks have been quite volatile, as the Sensex in the last 1 year has given a negative return of 3.28%. While Nifty 50 also traded in a similar manner, down 3.12% in the last 1 year.
