The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and several nearby regions, including Thane, Palghar, Navi Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. These areas are currently experiencing heavy rainfall and are expected to continue till 10 am today. The IMD alert is mainly because of the arrival of the active phase of the Southwest Monsoon, with forecasts predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall and even extremely heavy showers exceeding 20 cm at isolated places across Konkan and Goa and South Peninsular India.
Heavy Rainfall in Mumbai Today
Mumbai woke up to intense rainfall on Monday morning, with major downpours recorded between 2 AM and 5 AM. The downpour led to waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic disruptions, particularly in South Mumbai and the Western suburbs.
The Fort area topped the rain chart with 74 mm of rainfall, followed by Bandra Malabar Hill, Lower Parel, and Haji Ali. Areas like Matunga, Grant Road, Santacruz, and Dadar also received rain as per reports.

Orange Alert in Mumbai
The IMD orange alert indicates the likelihood of very heavy rainfall, leading to potential urban flooding, traffic snarls, and disruption in daily life. The IMD has urged residents to stay indoors unless necessary, monitor local advisories, and exercise caution while commuting.
Deaths Reported in Maharashtra Due to Rain
On Sunday, June 15, at least eight people lost their lives across Maharashtra due to rain-related incidents, mostly from lightning strikes. The persistent rainfall across the state is putting additional stress on emergency services and civic bodies, which are already on high alert.
Mumbai Weather Forecast for the Week
According to the seven-day forecast by IMD, the heavy rain spell is likely to continue over the next 24 to 48 hours. South Mumbai, Andheri, Borivali, and other parts of the western suburbs are expected to receive more rainfall, with intermittent spells of intense showers. The IMD warns that localised flooding is highly probable during peak hours, especially in coastal and low-lying areas.
