Mumbai and its surrounding districts are bracing for extreme weather conditions, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert warning for Sunday, September 28, 2025. The alert specifically covers Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, with forecasts indicating the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall, including intense and continuous spells in some areas.
Mumbai Weather Alert: IMD Issues Red Alert For Mumbai, Thane, Sindhudurg, Nashik & Other Regions in Maharashtra
The IMD has also highlighted that Sindhudurg district and the ghat regions of Nashik could experience significant downpours, increasing the risk of landslides and flash flooding in these hilly terrains. Meanwhile, other parts of Maharashtra including central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha are expected to see only low-intensity rainfall during this period.

High Alert Across Maharashtra Till September 30
In response to the forecast, the State Emergency Operation Centre has issued directives to all district administrations across the red-alert zones to remain on high alert until Tuesday, September 30. Emergency protocols have been activated, with control rooms ordered to operate round-the-clock, and civic bodies mobilizing disaster management teams and equipment.
Authorities have also warned of urban flooding in low-lying areas of Mumbai and other coastal Konkan districts. The situation is particularly concerning in the event of high tides coinciding with heavy rainfall, which could severely impact the city's drainage capacity. Civic officials have confirmed that a high tide of 3.24 metres is expected at 2:55 PM today, raising the risk of waterlogging across several areas. Conversely, a low tide at 8:50 PM (1.31 metres) may help ease flooding by allowing excess rainwater to drain more efficiently.
Water Pumps, Power Units, Repair Teams and Emergency Tools Deployed in High-Risk Districts
Disaster response measures have been intensified across the affected districts. Officials have deployed water-lifting pumps, pre-positioned repair teams, and arranged for disaster management tools such as power units and chain saws. River flow and dam discharge levels are also being closely monitored to manage the risk of flash floods or overflow situations.
BMC, IMD Urge Public Caution; Schools, Transport on High Vigil
Citizens have been urged to avoid non-essential travel, especially during peak rainfall and tide hours, and to stay tuned to official advisories issued by the IMD, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and state emergency departments. Schools in vulnerable areas have been put on alert for possible closures, and local transport authorities are coordinating with civic bodies to ensure rapid response in case of disruptions.
With the monsoon system intensifying over the Konkan coast, weather authorities are advising extreme caution for the next 48 hours. The red alert remains in effect, and officials continue to monitor the situation closely, prepared to escalate response measures if conditions worsen.
