Bollywood star Arshad Warsi, his wife Maria Goretti, and 57 other people have been subject to severe action by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for their roles in a stock market manipulation scheme involving Sadhna Broadcast Ltd.
What Is The Scandal About?
This scam was all about tricking people into buying shares of a company called Sadhna Broadcast Ltd. now renamed Crystal Business System Ltd. so that a group of people could make quick profits. SEBI found that the accused used a shady trick called a "pump-and-dump" scheme. Here's how it worked as per reports:
A few people who were linked to the company quietly started buying and selling shares among themselves. This made it look like the company's stock was in high demand, even though it wasn't. Since very few people normally trade this stock, even these small trades caused the price to go up a lot. This fooled other investors into thinking the stock was performing well.

Then, fake or misleading videos were uploaded on YouTube telling people to buy the stock, saying it was a great investment. Many common investors fell for these tips and started buying the shares, pushing the price even higher.
Once the price went up enough, the people behind the scam sold off their shares at the high price making huge profits while regular investors who bought the stock at inflated rates were left with losses.
SEBI's Actions On the Development
In response to these findings, SEBI has banned Arshad Warsi, Maria Goretti, and 57 others from participating in the securities markets for periods ranging from one to five years.
Arshad Warsi and Maria Goretti have each been fined Rs. 5 lakh. The total unlawful gains of Rs. 58.01 crore made by the accused are to be returned, along with 12% annual interest from the end of the investigation period until the date of actual payment
Specifically, Arshad Warsi made a profit of Rs. 41.70 lakh, while Maria Goretti earned Rs. 50.35 lakh from the scheme.
Key Individuals Involved
Gaurav Gupta, Rakesh Kumar Gupta, and Manish Mishra were identified as the scheme's masterminds in SEBI's 109-page ruling. Manish Mishra was in contact with the proprietors of Sadhna Broadcast Ltd. through Subhash Aggarwal, a director at the registrar of the firm. Jatin Shah was instrumental in carrying out the plan, while other prominent figures include Peeyush Agarwal and Lokesh Shah, who made it easier for manipulative trades to be made using their accounts.
Arshad Warsi's Net Worth
Arshad Warsi, best known for his iconic role as Circuit in the Munna Bhai films, has entertained us for decades. The actor, who is currently 57 years old, is still relevant on television. The last time we saw him was in the Zee 5 web series Asur.
