On December 23rd India celebrates the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Chaudhary Charan Singh Ji on which commemorates the contribution of farmers to the nation's economy and food security. National Farmers Day was first celebrated on 23rd December 2001.

Here are some of the schemes for the farmers of India launched by the Government of India which can help farmers boost agricultural productivity, reduce financial risks, and promote sustainable farming practices.
1. Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN)
The PM-KISAN scheme provides Rs. 6,000 per year as income support to eligible landholding farmers. The amount is transferred directly into bank accounts in three equal installments of Rs. 2,000 each through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
2. Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)
The PMFBY crop insurance scheme protects farmers against losses caused by natural calamities, pests, and diseases. Farmers pay very low premiums, while the government bears the majority of the cost. The scheme covers more than 50 crops, offering financial security during crop failure.
3. Kisan Credit Card (KCC)
Under the Kisan Credit Card scheme, farmers can avail short-term agricultural loans at an interest rate as low as 4%. The credit can be used for purchasing seeds, fertilisers, equipment, and meeting other farming-related expenses, reducing dependence on informal lenders.
4. Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY)
The PMKSY scheme focuses on improving irrigation efficiency through its "Per Drop More Crop" initiative. Under this scheme, farmers receive subsidies for drip and sprinkler irrigation systems, helping conserve water while increasing crop yield.
5. e-National Agriculture Market (e-NAM)
The e-NAM platform is an online trading portal that allows farmers to sell their produce across multiple mandis. By increasing market access and transparency, e-NAM helps farmers get better prices for their crops and reduces the role of middlemen.
6. Soil Health Card (SHC) Scheme
The Soil Health Card scheme provides free soil testing to farmers and recommends appropriate fertiliser use based on nutrient levels.
7. Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY)
The PKVY scheme promotes organic farming by supporting farmer clusters. Financial assistance of Rs. 31,500 per hectare is provided, out of which Rs. 15,000 is directly transferred to farmers to encourage chemical-free cultivation.
8. Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF)
Under the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund, farmers and agri-entrepreneurs can avail loans up to Rs. 2 crore with a 3% interest subvention. The scheme supports the creation of storage facilities, warehouses, cold chains, and post-harvest infrastructure.
9. PM-KUSUM Scheme
The PM-KUSUM scheme offers 30% to 50% subsidies for installing solar-powered pumps. Farmers can also earn extra income by selling surplus electricity to DISCOMs, while reducing dependence on diesel and electricity.
10. Pradhan Mantri Kisan Maan-Dhan Yojana
This scheme provides old-age income security to farmers. Under the PM Kisan Maan-Dhan Yojana, eligible farmers receive a monthly pension after the age of 60.
How Farmers Can Apply for These Schemes
Farmers can apply for different schemes through pmkisan.gov.in for PM-KISAN, Banks and cooperative societies for KCC and PMFBY and state agriculture department portals for irrigation, infrastructure, and organic farming schemes
Farmers are advised to check eligibility criteria carefully, as benefits and conditions may vary. Details should always be verified on official government websites, as schemes are updated periodically.
