India is set to observe a nationwide bank holiday on Thursday, October 2, 2025, on account of Gandhi Jayanti and the Hindu festival of Dussehra. The date also coincides with the culmination of Durga Puja celebrations in several states and the observance of Sri Sri Sankardeva Janmotsav in parts of Assam. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has officially listed October 2 as a countrywide public holiday for all banks.
Bank Holiday Today on Dussehra 2025: 2nd October Gandhi Jayanti Bank Holiday
According to the holiday calendar issued by the RBI, banks across India will remain closed on October 2 in observance of Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra. While Gandhi Jayanti honours the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, Dussehra is celebrated to commemorate the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.

Meanwhile, Durga Visarjan, the ceremonial immersion of Durga idols, will be performed in eastern states like West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, and Bihar, marking the end of Durga Puja. This alignment of national, religious and regional celebrations makes the first week of October especially vibrant across the country.
This closure will affect all public and private sector banks, including the State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank (PNB), Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, Union Bank of India and Bank of India, as well as private sector banks such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, IndusInd Bank, Yes Bank, IDFC FIRST Bank, Federal Bank and more.
During this period, physical branch services such as cash deposits, cash withdrawals, cheque clearances, demand draft processing and locker access will not be available across these institutions.
However, digital banking services, including internet banking, mobile banking, and ATM access, will continue to function. It's important to note that NEFT and RTGS transactions may be delayed or paused during holidays, depending on RBI settlement timings.
Bank Holidays Tomorrow; Banks Closed on October 3 and October 4 in These States
On October 3 and 4, banks in Gangtok will remain closed for Durga Puja festivities, particularly the observance of Dasain, which is culturally significant in Sikkim. October 4, being the second Saturday of the month, is already a standard bank holiday under RBI guidelines.
Finally, October 5, which falls on a Sunday, marks another regular closure, resulting in five consecutive non-working days in some areas, with regional variations extending the closure to seven days in a few states.
