In a recent address at the 21st medal award function of the Army Institute of Management Kolkata (AIMK), Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, underscored the importance of adaptability and innovative thinking in career planning. The event, held in Kolkata on April 9, saw Sanyal drawing from his rich career experience to guide AIMK graduates towards embracing flexibility in their professional journeys.

Sanyal's insights come at a time when the professional landscape is rapidly evolving, influenced by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). He emphasized the need for individuals to remain open to exploring diverse career avenues and to be receptive to emerging technologies and interests. According to Sanyal, the era we live in demands a strategic balance between persistence and flexibility, enabling individuals to navigate through changing career landscapes while staying focused on their long-term goals.
Reflecting on his own career trajectory, which spans two decades in financial markets, establishing himself as an economist and urban theorist, and later transitioning into policymaking and writing, Sanyal highlighted how his varied interests and adaptability have shaped his professional journey. "Many of you will find a career that you find interesting over time... Things will change, and your interests will change. Technology may wipe out the sector you started in," he remarked, stressing the inevitability of change and the importance of being prepared for it.
In addition to career advice, Sanyal also touched upon India's innovative approach to hosting the G20 summit. By organizing the event across numerous locations, including remote areas, India showcased its ability to think outside the box and deviate from traditional summit norms. This move not only highlighted India's logistical capabilities but also its commitment to inclusivity and showcasing diverse regions of the country on an international platform.
The AIMK also took this opportunity to launch a book on G-20 India's presidency, further emphasizing the institute's engagement with contemporary global economic discussions.
Sanyal's address at AIMK serves as a reminder of the dynamic nature of professional life and the continuous need for adaptability and innovation. As AI and ML continue to reshape industries, Sanyal's advice offers a roadmap for navigating these changes with confidence and strategic foresight.
