The National Highways Authority of India announces changes to FASTag KYV and VAHAN verification, reducing routine KYV checks for new and existing car FASTags while retaining complaint-based verification. Activation now requires VAHAN verification upfront, aiming to speed up issuances and minimise disputes for most users.
The National Highways Authority of India has decided to drop the Know Your Vehicle requirement for most new FASTag issuances from 1 February 2026. The change is expected to ease toll payment onboarding for car owners nationwide, while KYV checks will stay limited to specific complaint-based cases.

According to the new framework, KYV will not be needed when a fresh FASTag is issued for private vehicles like cars, jeeps and vans. Buyers obtaining FASTags on or after 1 February 2026 will skip an extra verification layer that previously caused delays and repeated document submissions.
New FASTag KYV VAHAN rules for car owners
Existing FASTag users will see reduced paperwork as well. FASTags already issued for cars will not face routine KYV reviews. If no complaint is recorded against a tag, the holder will not be asked for KYV at any later stage under the revised rules.
While KYV relaxes for regular issuance, checks will still apply in flagged cases. Authorities will insist on KYV if there are complaints about loose tags, wrong tag issuance, or any suspected misuse. These targeted checks aim to handle disputes while keeping the process simpler for most users.
FASTag KYV VAHAN verification and activation process
NHAI has also tightened the activation process through the VAHAN database. FASTags will be activated only after vehicle details are first verified on VAHAN. The earlier practice, where validation sometimes followed activation, has ended to avoid later corrections and repeated customer follow-ups.
FASTag uses Radio Frequency Identification technology to enable automatic toll collection while the vehicle keeps moving. The RFID tag is fixed on the vehicle windscreen and links to a prepaid or bank account. Toll amounts are then debited directly from that linked account whenever the vehicle crosses a supported toll plaza.
| Aspect | Before 1 February 2026 | From 1 February 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| KYV for new car FASTags | Generally required | Not required for standard issuances |
| KYV for existing car FASTags | Possible routine checks | No routine KYV without complaints |
| VAHAN verification timing | Could occur after activation | Must be completed before activation |
| KYV in complaint cases | Applied as needed | Remains mandatory |
The revised system keeps security checks through VAHAN and complaint-based KYV, while cutting routine hurdles for car owners. By moving validation to the start and limiting extra paperwork, NHAI is aiming for faster FASTag availability and fewer disputes for regular users on national highways.
