The prestigious National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, organized a two-day international conference on sustainability and innovation on March 15 and 16, 2023. The conference featured the presentation of 99 research papers and three panel discussions, bringing together experts and scholars from various fields to explore innovative approaches to sustainable development.

Sustainability Rooted in Indian Society
In his inaugural address, NIFT Gandhinagar Director Dr. Sameer Sood highlighted the deep-rooted nature of sustainability in Indian society, dating back nearly 4,000 years. He emphasized the importance of sustainability as emphasized in the Vedas and the concept of Panch Tatvas for the planet's sustainable development. Dr. Sood also referenced the ancient Indian concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which inspired the theme for India's G20 presidency last year.
Panel Discussions on Sustainability and Skills
One of the panel discussions focused on "Brand Bharat: Sustainability, Scale, and Skills." World Design Organization President Pradyumna Vyas discussed the pivotal role of Brand Bharat in shaping the global textile industry. He stressed the need for a holistic approach to sustainability in design, ensuring that the true value of products, whether handmade or machine-made, is communicated effectively.
Another panellist, Chandrima Chatterjee, Secretary-General of the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI), emphasized the industry's responsibility in sustainability, particularly in water and waste management. The panel outlined a path forward where sustainability, scale, and skills continue to define Brand Bharat in the global arena.
Youth Involvement and Skill Development
The conference also addressed the issue of youth involvement in sustainability. Param Vir Chakra recipient Captain Yogendra Singh Yadav highlighted the critical need for skill development among the younger generation. He emphasized the importance of harnessing skills effectively as India approaches 100 years of Independence.
The NIFT Gandhinagar International Conference on Sustainability and Innovation provided a platform for experts and scholars to exchange ideas, share research findings, and explore innovative solutions to address sustainability challenges. The conference emphasized the significance of sustainability as an integral part of Indian society and highlighted the role of design, skills, and youth involvement in shaping a sustainable future.
