New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will embark on a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka starting Wednesday. During her visit, she will address the NAAM 200 and India Sri Lanka Business Summit, among other events.
NAAM 200

Sitharaman will deliver the keynote address as the Guest of Honour at the NAAM 200 organized by the Government of Sri Lanka to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the arrival of India-origin Tamils IOTs to the island nation on November 2 in Colombo. The event will be graced by Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, and several other dignitaries. Invitees from Indian political parties and a representative of the Malaysian Tamil Congress will also be present.
India Sri Lanka Business Summit
The finance minister will also give a keynote address at the India Sri Lanka Business Summit on Enhancing Connectivity: Partnering for Prosperity. The summit is being jointly organized by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), Indo-Lanka Chamber of Commerce & Industry, and the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.
Official Meetings and MoUs
As part of her official visit, Sitharaman will call on the President and Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. She will witness the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding for the Solar Electrification of Religious Places in Sri Lanka. Under this initiative, India will allocate Rs 82.40 crore out of the Government of India's total grant of Rs 107.47 crore earmarked for the promotion of Buddhist ties.
Inauguration of SBI Branches
The finance minister will inaugurate SBI branches at Trincomalee and Jaffna, expanding India's banking presence in Sri Lanka.
Visit to Religious and Cultural Sites
Sitharaman will visit several religious and cultural sites during her visit, including the Sri Dalada Maligawa (The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic) in Kandy, Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura, Thirukoneswaram Temple in Trincomalee, and Kandaswamy Temple in Nallur.
Other Engagements
In addition to the above engagements, the Union Finance Minister is also slated to visit Lanka IOC Oil Tank Farms, Jaffna Cultural Centre, and Jaffna Public Library.
Significance of the Visit
Sitharaman's visit to Sri Lanka comes at a crucial time when the country is grappling with a severe economic crisis, the worst since its independence from Britain in 1948. India has extended significant assistance to Sri Lanka, including credit lines and currency support, in line with its Neighbourhood First policy. The visit underscores India's commitment to supporting Sri Lanka's recovery and strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.
