NITI Aayog is set to convene a crucial workshop involving the Centre and coastal states to tackle challenges and devise a collective strategy for the sustainable development of Indias marine fisheries sector.
In a bid to ensure the sustainable growth of India's marine fisheries, NITI Aayog is set to convene a high-level national workshop on January 5, 2023, at the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) in Kochi, Kerala. The workshop aims to address critical challenges in the sector and develop a collaborative roadmap for optimal utilization of marine resources.

Key Participants and Objectives
The workshop will bring together key stakeholders, including NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery, Member Ramesh Chand, officials from NITI Aayog, the Union Fisheries Ministry, and fisheries departments from nine coastal states and one union territory. Representatives from West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andaman and Nicobar will participate in the event.
The workshop serves as a platform for experience sharing between marine states, fostering open dialogue on challenges faced and potential solutions. Key aspects such as certification and sustainability, market linkages, value addition, seafood export, and challenges in the fishing and seafood industry will be deliberated upon.
Significance and Goals
The workshop holds significant importance as it recognizes the need for concerted efforts and cooperation between coastal states and the central government to unlock the potential of India's marine wealth. The objective is to develop tailored strategies and partnerships that address challenges and explore prospects in the marine fisheries sector.
NITI Aayog's initiative to organize this national workshop underscores the government's commitment to promoting sustainable growth and development in the marine fisheries sector. By bringing together key stakeholders and fostering collaboration, the workshop aims to chart a course for harnessing the potential of India's marine resources and ensuring the long-term viability of the industry.
