Nitin Gadkari Retains Position as Road Transport Minister in Modi's Cabinet

Senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari, known for his significant contributions to India's infrastructure, has been reappointed as the Road Transport and Highways Minister in the latest Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This marks his third consecutive term, underscoring his pivotal role in the development of national highways across the country. At 67, the Nagpur-based politician has emerged as the longest-serving minister in this portfolio, with an impressive track record that includes the construction of over 54,858 km of national highways over the past decade.

Gadkari's leadership is set to further manifest in ambitious projects such as the completion of the 1,386-km Delhi-Mumbai Expressway by December this year. His tenure has not only been marked by infrastructural advancements but also by a consistent electoral success from the Nagpur constituency, a region closely linked with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). His induction into the NDA government as a cabinet minister was officially announced on Sunday.

Having ventured into national politics in 2009 as the BJP president, Gadkari's political journey is notable for its breadth and impact. Since his Lok Sabha debut in 2014, he has managed various key portfolios including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), shipping, water resources, river development and Ganga rejuvenation, rural development, and panchayati raj. His legislative career began in 1989 as a member of the Maharashtra legislative council from Nagpur Graduates' constituency, a position he held until 2014.

Gadkari's first ministerial role came in 1995 when he took charge of the Public Works Department (PWD) in Maharashtra. His tenure saw significant infrastructural developments such as the construction of all-weather roads and efforts to combat malnutrition in Vidarbha's Melghat area. Notable projects like the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and 54 flyovers in Mumbai were realized under his leadership. Additionally, the conception of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link project occurred during his term as PWD minister.

The Bharatmala Pariyojana phase 1 is another testament to Gadkari's vision for India's infrastructure. This initiative encompasses several greenfield expressway projects that are currently under various stages of completion. Gadkari's reappointment as Road Transport and Highways Minister is indicative of his central role in driving forward India's infrastructural development and showcases his enduring influence in shaping the country's road and highway landscape.
