Northeast Region Presents USD 100 Billion Data Centre Opportunity, Says MoS Telecom

The Northeast region of India holds a significant potential for a USD 100 billion data centre industry, thanks to its favourable climate and renewable energy possibilities, according to Pemmasani Chandra Shekhar, the minister of state for telecom. Speaking at the Rising North East Investors Summit 2025, Shekhar highlighted the region's unique advantages.

Northeast Offers USD 100 Billion Data Centre Opportunity

Over the past decade, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, investments totalling Rs 1.5 lakh crore have been made in both digital and physical infrastructure in the Northeast. Notably, more than Rs 50,000 crore has been allocated to the Bharatnet rural broadband project. This investment has significantly improved connectivity in the region.

Infrastructure and Connectivity Growth

The Northeast has witnessed remarkable progress in connectivity. Currently, over 90% of the area is covered by 4G networks, and 70-80% has access to 5G services. Additionally, nearly 80% of rural households are connected through Bharatnet's fibre-optic network. The region also boasts more than 80 operational parks in cities like Guwahati, Shillong, and Agartala.

Shekhar emphasised that while other regions may have superior infrastructure, the Northeast stands out due to its creative and imaginative people. The region's natural beauty and living conditions foster innovation among its residents and entrepreneurs.

Advancements in Technology

The government is actively working on initiatives such as the 6G mission, quantum communications, and satellite networks to ensure high-quality internet access even in remote areas. These efforts aim to connect every rural and remote location with high-speed internet.

Beyond infrastructure, the real strength of the Northeast lies in its people. The region is home to one of India's most literate, English-speaking, and digitally savvy youth populations. This demographic advantage positions the Northeast as a hub for technological innovation.

Cultural Heritage and AI Opportunities

The Northeast is rich in cultural diversity, with over 200 languages and various traditions. Preserving and promoting this cultural heritage is crucial. Shekhar suggested that the region could lead in developing multilingual AI systems and creating digital archives of folk songs, stories, and traditional knowledge.

The Northeast's strategic location bordering countries like China, Bangladesh, and Myanmar offers opportunities for advanced security solutions. By leveraging AI-powered cameras and sensors for smart border monitoring, the region can enhance national security while generating numerous high-tech jobs.

This combination of cultural richness and technological potential makes Northeast India a promising leader in cultural AI applications. The region's unique position allows it to contribute significantly to both national security advancements and cultural preservation efforts.
