In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) apprehended Vijay Kumar, a senior manager of corporate communications at the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), on allegations of accepting a bribe. The arrest, made on Friday, came after Kumar was caught red-handed receiving an illicit payment of Rs 8 lakh in Mumbai. This operation stemmed from a complaint lodged by the vice-president of an advertising company, accusing Kumar of demanding a bribe to facilitate the clearance of bills amounting to approximately Rs 40 lakh.

The backdrop to this case involves the advertising company's installation of booths in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Puducherry during January and February on behalf of NTPC. Despite submitting an invoice for the completed work valued at Rs 40 lakh, the necessary work completion certificates from local authorities in both regions were pending, hindering bill clearance. The situation escalated when Kumar allegedly solicited a bribe initially set at Rs 6 lakh, with the promise of ensuring smooth bill processing. The demanded amount later surged to Rs 9.45 lakh before settling at Rs 8 lakh after negotiations.
Acting on the complaint, the CBI orchestrated a sting operation in Mumbai, resulting in Kumar's capture while accepting the bribe. Following his arrest, authorities conducted searches at his residence in Noida to gather further evidence. This incident has cast a shadow over NTPC's corporate communications department, highlighting vulnerabilities within corporate and governmental bill processing systems.
The case has now moved to the judicial system for further proceedings, with Kumar facing charges related to corruption and abuse of official position for personal gain. This arrest underscores the ongoing efforts by Indian law enforcement agencies to clamp down on corruption within both public and private sector operations.
