NTPC Limited, India's leading integrated power utility, celebrated a significant achievement on Monday as its coal-mining subsidiary exceeded the production of 100 million metric tonnes (MMT) of coal by NTPC Mining Ltd. (NML).
This remarkable milestone was achieved on February 25, 2024, marking a historic moment for NTPC Mining Ltd. The cumulative quantity of coal produced by the subsidiary since January 1, 2017, when coal production commenced in its first coal mine Pakri Barwadih, reached an impressive 100.04 MMT.

Notably, the journey to this milestone highlights the subsidiary's remarkable efficiency, with the first 50 MMT of coal production accomplished in 1,995 days on June 19, 2022, while the subsequent 50 MMT of coal production was achieved in just 617 days, less than one-third of the time.
This outstanding performance underscores NTPC Mining's relentless commitment to enhancing coal production from its captive mines, thereby contributing significantly to NTPC's fuel security and ensuring efficient supply to meet the nation's energy needs.
Currently, NTPC Mining Ltd. operates five captive coal mines, namely Pakri Barwadih, Chatti Bariatu, and Kerandari Coal Mines in Jharkhand, Dulanga Coal Mine in Odisha, and Talaipalli Coal Mine in Chhattisgarh.
NTPC has deployed a wide range of tactics and technology to maintain and accelerate the increase of coal production. These initiatives include the adoption of stringent safety measures, enhanced mine planning, automation of equipment, workforce training, and the implementation of continuous monitoring and analysis systems.
Looking ahead, NTPC Mining Ltd. aims to achieve a coal production target of 100 MMT per annum by the year 2030, reinforcing its commitment to meeting the nation's growing energy demands while upholding the highest standards of operational excellence and sustainability.
