Odisha has made a big discovery that could change its mining future. The state has found diamond-bearing stones in Nuapada district and ruby deposits in Kalahandi district, giving a big boost to India's gemstone sector.

Diamonds Deposits Found
In Nuapada district, scientists have found diamond-bearing rocks in an area called Kalamidadar. These rocks are known as lamproite, which is often associated with diamonds.
Geologists have also identified nearby areas like Pokhanpadar, Supuli, Bharuamunda, Kathiwadi, and Arkholi as potential zones where more diamond deposits could be present. However, detailed studies are still needed to confirm how much diamond is actually available and whether it can be mined commercially.
Ruby deposits in Kalahandi
In Kalahandi district, the focus is on rubies and other gemstones. Around 28 different locations have shown signs of gemstone presence in the Junagarh region.
If rubies are actually found Kalahandi could become an important hub for precious stones in the future, not just for Odisha but for the entire country.
Right now, no commercial mining has started. The state government will first carry out detailed studies to check whether extracting these diamonds and rubies is technically possible, economically viable, and environmentally safe.
Experts will use advanced DGPS‑based geological mapping, viability studies and surveys to understand the size and quality of these deposits. Only after that will any decision on commercial mining be taken.
"As reported by Business Standard, the minister said that, in addition to other precious minerals, gold-bearing stones have been discovered at multiple locations across the state. He noted that gold- and copper-rich formations have been identified in the Madanasahi-Kanjia area of the Kuliana block in Mayurbhanj district, while similar indications of gold mineralisation have also been observed in the Gopur-Jaladihi region of the Banspal block in Keonjhar district."
This discovery can be seen as the start of a possible new gemstone belt in western Odisha. While it is still early days, the findings have opened up exciting possibilities. For now, all eyes are on the upcoming surveys and reports that will decide whether these hidden treasures can truly be turned into economic gains.
