Despite the steep free fall that has been witnessed in crude for past so many days, the state of Nagaland becomes the first in India to levy Covid 19 cess and this in turn makes auto fuel both diesel and petrol expensive here. So, on the current retail prices, people in the state will have to shell out an additional Rs. 6 per litre in case of petrol and Rs. 5 per litre in case of diesel.

In exercise of power conferred by subsection 3 of section 3A of the Nagaland (sales of petroleum and petroleum products including motor spirit and lubricants) Taxation Act, 1967 (as amended) the Governor of Nagaland is pleased to notify that in addition to existing rate of tax and cess, the COVID-19 cess shall be levied", the Additional ChiefSecretary and Finance Commissioner, Sentiyanger Imchen said in a release.
The new rates become applicable from April 28 midnight.
Earlier Assam government increased taxes on on petrol by Rs 6 and on diesel by Rs 5. Meghalaya too has charged sales tax surcharge on motor spirit such as petrol at 2%.
