The plastic industry significantly boosts the economy and offers numerous job opportunities, according to Chemicals & Petrochemicals Secretary Nivedita Shukla Verma. She inaugurated a four-day Global Conclave on Plastic Recycling and Sustainability (GCPRS) organised by the All India Plastics Manufacturers Association (AIPMA) and the Chemicals and Petrochemicals Manufacturers Association (CPMA) at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.

Verma highlighted that only ten per cent of global plastic waste is recycled. She praised AIPMA and CPMA for addressing this critical issue through the conclave. "Be that as it may, and despite transitioning from a material of wonder to a victim of its own success, the plastic industry remains one of the leading contributors to the economy and in providing employment to millions globally," she said.
Government Initiatives on Plastic Waste Management
In 2016, the government introduced the Plastic Waste Management Rules to tackle plastic pollution. These rules mandated extended producer responsibility, enforced stricter recycling measures, and banned specific single-use plastics. Over the years, various amendments have broadened these rules' scope. Verma emphasised the role of CIPET and DCPC in implementing these regulations effectively.
With environmental regulations becoming stricter worldwide, Verma stressed the urgency of transitioning to a sustainable circular economy. She urged stakeholders to collaborate across sectors to achieve this goal.
Industry Leaders' Perspectives
AIPMA President Manish Dedhia, CPMA President Kamal Nanavati, AIPMA Governing Council Chairman Arvind Mehta, GCPRS 2024 Chairman Hiten Bheda, Pranav Kumar from CPMA, Shishir Sinha from Plastindia Foundation, and Shri Ravish Kamath from Plastindia attended the event. They discussed various aspects of plastic recycling and sustainability.
Kamal Nanavati pointed out that managing plastic waste is a global challenge requiring cooperation among all value chain participants and governments. He stated that GCPRS aims to facilitate dialogues for developing solutions. "The Indian industry is actively working to improve plastic circularity and ensure the effective implementation of regulatory requirements through cooperation with the government," he said.
India's Growing Plastic Recycling Industry
India's plastic recycling sector is expanding rapidly and is projected to reach USD 6.9 billion by 2033. The government's initiatives and an existing recycling rate of about 60 per cent underscore India's commitment to managing plastic waste effectively.
Arvind D Mehta, Chairman of the Technology and Entrepreneurship Center (AMTEC), mentioned their efforts in preparing highly skilled professionals for India's advancing plastic industry. This initiative aims to support the industry's growth while addressing environmental concerns.
The event focused on increasing plastic use, its environmental impact, and necessary solutions. Verma told stakeholders that collaborative efforts across various sectors are essential for tackling these issues effectively.
The conclave provided a platform for discussions on improving plastic circularity and ensuring regulatory compliance through industry-government cooperation. The participation of key industry leaders highlighted the collective commitment towards sustainable practices in plastic management.
The GCPRS event underscored the importance of addressing plastic waste management through innovation and collaboration. It aimed to foster discussions that could lead to practical solutions for enhancing sustainability in the plastic industry.
