Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lead a crucial Cabinet meeting on Friday at 1 p.m. This gathering aims to address the recent significant tariff increase by the United States on Indian exports. Although the agenda hasn't been officially disclosed, media reports suggest that the tariff issue will be a central topic of discussion.
The backdrop for this meeting is escalating trade tensions following Washington's decision to double tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent. The latest increase, an additional 25 per cent duty, was announced by US President Donald Trump on Wednesday. The justification cited for this hike was India's continued purchase of Russian crude oil.

India's Response to Tariff Hike
The Ministry of External Affairs has strongly criticised the US's decision, labelling it as "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable." They stressed the importance of maintaining India's energy needs and strategic independence. This new duty follows an earlier 25 per cent tariff that was implemented on July 20.
In response to these developments, Prime Minister Modi has reiterated his commitment to protecting the interests of farmers, fishermen, and livestock owners. Speaking at the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in Delhi on Thursday, he stated: "The welfare of farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on their interests. I know I will have to pay a heavy personal price for this, but I am ready - and so is India - for the sake of its farmers, fishermen, and livestock keepers."
US Stance on Negotiations
President Trump has indicated that discussions with India regarding the tariff issue are unlikely to resume soon. When questioned about potential negotiations after the 50 per cent duty takes effect on August 27, he responded: "No, not until we get it resolved."
This situation highlights growing trade friction between the two nations as they navigate complex economic relationships. The outcome of Friday's Cabinet meeting could shape India's strategic response moving forward.
