The PM SVANidhi Scheme has been effective in ensuring societal harmonisation among unformalised segments of urban micro-entrepreneurs and dismantling select community blockades, a report said.
The Pradhan Mantri Street Vendors Atma Nirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme, launched by the Indian government in June 2020, has been instrumental in providing much-needed financial assistance to street vendors who were adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. As one of the largest micro-credit urban programmes worldwide, PM SVANidhi has also been effective in ensuring societal harmonization among unformalized segments of urban micro-entrepreneurs from fringe strata and dismantling select community blockades.
Women Empowerment

According to a report by SBI Research, 43 percent of women beneficiaries in the PM SVANidhi scheme have been empowered with entrepreneurial capabilities. This indicates that the scheme is effectively promoting gender equality and empowering women to become financially independent.
Loan Repayment and Uptake
The report also highlights that the ratio of people repaying the first loan of Rs 10,000 and taking the second loan of Rs 20,000 is 68 percent, while the ratio of people repaying the second loan of Rs 20,000 and taking the third loan of Rs 50,000 is 75 percent. This indicates that the scheme is successful in encouraging micro-entrepreneurs to grow their businesses by availing larger loans.
Increased Digital Transactions
The report further states that the average debit card spending of PM SVANidhi account holders increased by 50 percent post-disbursement of loan installments. This suggests that the scheme is promoting digital transactions among micro-entrepreneurs, which is essential for financial inclusion and economic growth.
Impact on Spending Habits
The report also reveals that 63 percent of those below the 25 and above 60 age groups spend more post-disbursement of the loan. This indicates that the scheme is benefiting both young and elderly micro-entrepreneurs, enabling them to invest in their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
Formalization of Economy
PM SVANidhi is contributing to the formalization of the economy by bringing marginalized micro-entrepreneurs into the banking system. A back-of-the-envelope calculation suggests that around 30 percent of the new credit accounts added during the last decade were from beneficiaries who were either new to credit or deposit. This is contributing to incremental credit growth and boosting the overall economy.
The PM SVANidhi scheme has been a game-changer for urban micro-entrepreneurs, particularly women and marginalized communities. By providing access to collateral-free working capital loans, the scheme has empowered micro-entrepreneurs to restart and grow their businesses. The scheme has also promoted digital transactions and contributed to the formalization of the economy. Overall, PM SVANidhi is a shining example of how government initiatives can make a positive impact on the lives of marginalized communities and contribute to economic growth.
