10 days remaining for Pongal 2026 celebration and the Tamil Nadu government has officially announced its much-awaited Pongal gift package for ration card holders. Pongal is one of the most important harvest festivals in South India, is celebrated to honour the Sun God, agriculture, and cattle that sustain rural livelihoods.
The four-day festival Bhogi, Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal and Uzhavar Thirunal is observed across the state, and the annual government gift package is awaited by low income households in Tamil Nadu which helps them to celebrate the Pongal festival without financial worries.

What Is Pongal and Why Is It Celebrated?
Pongal is a traditional Tamil harvest festival that marks the beginning of the Tamil month Thai. The festival thanks the Sun for a successful harvest and celebrates farmers, cattle, and nature. Pongal is celebrated for four days, the first days is Bhogi Pongal, second day is called Thai Pongal, and the third day is Mattu Pongal and the final day is called Uzhavar Thirunal.
Pongal 2026 Gift Hamper: What Will Ration Card Holders Get?
For Pongal 2026, ration card holders in Tamil Nadu will receive a gift hamper that includes essential food items commonly used during the festival.
The Pongal gift package 2026 will contain 4 kg of rice, Sugar, Green gram (moong dal), 300 grams of ghee and1 litre of sunflower oil.
As per Reports, the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department has decided to provide a direct cash benefit instead of distributing veshtis and sarees this year. The money will be directly credited to beneficiaries' bank accounts, ensuring quicker and more flexible use of funds.
Puducherry Pongal 2026 Gift Details
The Puducherry government has also announced similar arrangements for Pongal 2026. Instead of physical hampers, eligible ration card holders will receive cash assistance based on family size.
As per the announced plan, Single-member ration card holders will receive Rs. 500 and Ration cards with more than two members will receive Rs. 1,000. The amount will be transferred directly to the beneficiaries' bank accounts.

Valid ration card holders in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry
Beneficiaries registered under the public distribution system (PDS)
Bank-linked accounts for receiving direct cash transfers
Officials have advised beneficiaries to ensure their bank and Aadhaar details are updated to avoid delays.
