The Government has stated that a total of 41.75 crore accounts have been opened under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), out of which 35.96 crore accounts are operational.
It was stated by Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, Union Minister of State for Finance & Corporate Affairs, in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha.
Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is one of the most successful projects initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Under Pradhan Mantri Jan-DhanYojana (PMJDY) a bank account can be opened with any private bank, public sector bank, or business correspondent (BC).
The Minister further claimed that the overall number of PMJDY accounts opened by PSBs (including funded RRBs) and 14 major private sector banks is 40.48 crore and 1.27 crore, respectively.

PMJDY are Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) accounts in which banks are required to provide the minimum banking facilities free of charge to BSBD account holders without a minimum balance requirement.
Following are the basic services that are offered under PMJDY:
- Cash Deposit at bank branch as well as ATMs/CDMs
- A credit of money through any electronic channel or using deposit /collection of cheques
- There is no limit on the number and value of deposits that can be made in a month
- Minimum of four withdrawals in a month, including ATM withdrawals
- ATM Card or ATM-cum-Debit Card is provided along with account
During the Covid-19 lockdown, the Modi Government declared a range of subsidies that were transferred through direct bank transfer (DBT) or to the PM Jan Dhan account.
PMJDY is a national mission for financial inclusion to provide access to banking facilities in an accessible manner.
