Punjab, facing challenges with depleting groundwater levels, seeks collaboration with Israel to adopt advanced agricultural technologies. Discussions centered around water-efficient horticulture, digital solutions, precision farming, greenhouse cultivation, and high-tech machinery, aiming to enhance sustainability and productivity in the states agricultural sector.
In a significant move to address critical agricultural challenges, Punjab's Horticulture Minister, Chetan Singh Jauramajra, met with a high-level delegation from Israel on Tuesday, January 23. The meeting aimed to explore potential collaborations in advanced agricultural technologies that can transform the state's farming practices.

Addressing Water Depletion and Crop Yield
During the meeting held in Chandigarh, Jauramajra highlighted the urgent need to tackle the rapid depletion of underground water levels in Punjab. He emphasized the importance of adopting high-yielding and disease-free horticultural varieties that require less water. The minister sought Israel's expertise in providing such varieties to enhance agricultural productivity while conserving water resources.
Key Areas for Collaboration
Jauramajra outlined several key areas for collaboration with Israel. These included digital solutions for pest control, climate and soil monitoring systems, Artificial Intelligence (AI) for crop yields, decision support systems, drones for sprays, and precision farming software solutions. The discussions also explored the potential of year-round cultivation in greenhouses and hydroponic farming to meet the growing demand for food.
Introduction of High-Tech Agricultural Machinery
The minister emphasized the need for introducing high-tech agricultural machinery to improve efficiency and sustainability in farming. He highlighted the importance of harvesting machines, tree shakers, cultivators, rotary mulchers, and special field robots. Additionally, Jauramajra focused on sensor technology-based irrigation systems and innovative storage solutions to optimize water usage and reduce post-harvest losses.
Vegetable Varieties and Technological Collaboration
In the vegetable sector, Jauramajra advocated for the introduction of seedless varieties of melons, single-picking varieties of peas and tomatoes suitable for mechanization, and brinjal varieties resistant to fruit and shoot borers. Israel's Political Domestic Advisor, Hadas Bakst, expressed Israel's keenness to enhance technological collaboration in the agriculture and horticulture sectors with Punjab.
Expert-Level Meetings and Future Plans
Bakst mentioned that expert-level meetings will be held in February and March to further discuss the collaboration. These meetings will focus on delivering the latest technology and introducing new horticultural varieties that address Punjab's depleting groundwater issues. The collaboration between Punjab and Israel holds immense promise for transforming the state's agricultural sector, ensuring sustainable farming practices, and meeting the growing food demands of the region.
