Rajasthan Targets 60 GW in Renewable Energy by 2030, Aiming for Sustainable Growth

Rajasthan is on the brink of a significant transformation in its energy sector, with projections indicating a surge in cost-effective variable renewable energy (VRE) capacity. By 2030, the state is expected to achieve over 60 GW of VRE capacity, evenly split between solar photovoltaics (PV) and wind energy. This insight was shared by energy expert Jiwesh Nandan, a fellow at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), during a mentorship programme for industries focusing on solar and renewable energy in Rajasthan.

Rajasthans 60 GW Renewable Goal by 2030

Nandan, who has a background as a former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, pointed out that Indian businesses are currently developing technologies aimed at meeting future energy needs. He emphasized the critical role of renewable energy in transforming Rajasthan's commercial and industrial sectors. Nandan encouraged industry representatives to consider low-carbon policy options that promote renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Furthermore, Nandan highlighted the importance of integrating solar energy into commercial and industrial operations, advocating for customized solutions tailored to each sector's specific needs. He also brought attention to Rajasthan's Renewable Energy Policy 2023, which sets an ambitious target of 90 GW of renewable energy projects by the financial year 2029-30. This policy is seen as a key driver for sustainable energy development in the state.

One of the innovative strategies discussed was shifting agricultural demand to daytime hours and integrating electric vehicle (EV) load to reduce dependence on grid-scale batteries. This approach aims to enhance energy sustainability in Rajasthan by leveraging the state's renewable resources more efficiently.

A study conducted by TERI suggests that by 2030, it is feasible to integrate renewables into 35 percent of the total energy mix at no extra system generation cost. To achieve this, utilities will need to develop a comprehensive roadmap to manage the increasing volume of renewable energy while addressing the challenges posed by the variability and intermittency of VRE.

This development marks a significant step towards achieving sustainable energy solutions in Rajasthan, highlighting the state's commitment to embracing renewable resources. As industries and policymakers work together towards this goal, Rajasthan sets an example for other states in India to follow in the transition towards cleaner energy sources.
