Raksha Bandhan, a festival symbolising the bond between siblings, will be celebrated on 9 August 2025. On this day, sisters tie a protective thread, known as Rakhi, on their brothers' wrists. In return, brothers promise to protect their sisters throughout their lives. This tradition is believed to have started when Draupadi tied a piece of her saree around Lord Krishna's wrist during the Rajasuya Yagna.

Raksha Bandhan 2025 Muhurat: Auspicious Time To Tie Rakhi
The auspicious time to tie Rakhi in 2025 starts at 5:47 AM and ends at 1:24 PM on the same day. This period lasts for approximately seven hours and thirty-seven minutes. Additionally, there are other favourable times such as Brahma Muhurat from 4:22 AM to 5:02 AM and Abhijit Muhurat from 12:17 PM to 12:53 PM.
This year brings several auspicious yogas for celebrating Raksha Bandhan. The Saubhagya Muhurat extends from 4:08 AM until early morning on 10 August at 2:15 AM. Furthermore, Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga spans from 5:47 AM until 2:23 PM on the same day.
Rakhi Celebrations: Gift-Giving Traditions
On this occasion, sisters prepare a plate containing roli, sandalwood paste, rice grains, curd, Rakhi threads, and sweets along with a ghee lamp. They first offer these items to God before tying the Rakhi to their brothers facing east or north. After applying tilak and tying the Rakhi, they perform an aarti and feed sweets to their brothers while wishing them well.
After tying the Rakhi, brothers should seek blessings from parents and teachers while giving gifts to their sisters according to their capacity. It is advised that gifts should be auspicious for both parties involved. Avoid gifting black clothes or spicy and salty foods.
Significance of Raksha Sutra
The protective thread or Raksha Sutra should ideally consist of three colours, red, yellow and white-with red and yellow being essential. If possible, it should also have sandalwood paste applied for added auspiciousness. In its absence, one can use Kalawa with devotion.
During ancient times, Brahmins would tie Rakhis to their patrons for their well-being. Additionally, Vedic scholars commence reciting Yajurveda as starting education is considered beneficial on this day.
