The Indian government is currently working on the Digital India Bill in order to control the spread of obscene content and monitor social media activities. This bill is expected to tackle the growing challenges in the digital media and to make sure that the online space is safer and more accountable. The influence of social media and digital platforms is increasing day by day. The government is planning to establish clearer guidelines and stricter regulations to maintain ethical standards in the freedom of expression in the digital age.
A Major Move By Govt Ranveer Allahabadia Controversy
The massive surge in digital content consumption in India has brought with it concerns over the spread of obscene and explicit material online. The recent controversy involving YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, who faced legal action for making obscene remarks on comedian Samay Raina's show, has sparked huge discussions around the need for stricter content regulation. The Supreme Court intervened in this matter, and there is an urgency to establish clear guidelines to govern online content and protect public morality.

What is the Digital India Bill?
- The Digital India Bill is a comprehensive legislative framework designed to regulate digital platforms, control the spread of obscene content, and monitor social media activities. If passed this bill will replace the IT Act of India which was established in the year 2000. While the full text of the Digital India Bill is yet to be released, several anticipated provisions have been highlighted:
- The bill is expected to ban the hosting, display, uploading, modification, publication, transmission, storage, updating, or sharing of content deemed obscene or sexually explicit. This aligns with existing regulations under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, as per an NDTV report.
- Social media personalities, especially those with a big user base, will be required to exercise due diligence. PIB issued a release that stated that the Digital India bill includes appointing compliance officers, establishing grievance redressal mechanisms, and ensuring prompt action against content that violates the laid guidelines.
- The Digital India Bill proposes stringent penalties for platforms and individuals found in violation of its provisions. This may include hefty fines and, in severe cases, imprisonment, depending on the nature and gravity of the offense.
Public and Industry Response
The proposal of the Digital India Bill has garnered mixed reactions. Many argue that it is a necessary step to fight the circulation of harmful content and to protect societal values. However, critics express concerns over potential overreach and the impact on free speech.
