Ravi Robert Jerard Granted Three-Month Extension as CMD of BSNL and MTNL Amid Cabinet Review
The telecom department has extended Robert Jerard Ravi's additional charge as chairman and managing director of BSNL and MTNL for three months. This extension is subject to the appointments committee of the Cabinet's approval, according to a regulatory filing. Ravi initially took on this role on July 13, 2024, after PK Purwar's extension request was denied.

To prevent vacancies in key positions, the department has decided to continue Ravi's interim appointment. His tenure will now last until April 14, 2025, or until further notice. This decision ensures continuity in leadership for BSNL, MTNL, and BBNL.
Telecom Sector Leadership
Ravi also serves as Deputy Director General Standards Research and Innovation. His leadership has been crucial in advancing BSNL's 4G network installation and finalising BharatNet phase 3 tenders. BharatNet aims to connect 6.4 lakh villages and all 2.64 lakh gram panchayats.
The BharatNet project is being executed in stages to provide broadband access to India's gram panchayats. As of October 2024, phases I and II have made 2,14,283 gram panchayats service-ready, according to an official note.
Ravi's efforts have significantly contributed to the telecom sector's progress. His work on the BharatNet project is pivotal for enhancing rural connectivity across India. The project's phased implementation continues to expand broadband access nationwide.
The telecom department's decision reflects the importance of stable leadership during critical infrastructure projects. Ravi's extended role ensures ongoing progress in vital initiatives like BSNL's network expansion and BharatNet's rural connectivity goals.
