"There are reports in certain sections of the media that the Reserve Bank of India is considering changes to the existing currency and banknotes by replacing the face of Mahatma Gandhi with that of others. It may be noted that there is no such proposal in the Reserve Bank," said RBI in the statement.
A recent media report first published in The New Indian Express has stated, that the RBI is considering changing the Gandhi image on Indian currency, and Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore is one of the figures whose image is being evaluated for future notes. According to sources, APJ Abdul Kalam was also a candidate to succeed Gandhi.
