The Red Sea crisis has not affected container availability for Indian traders, with exports continuing via the Cape of Good Hope route. The government is closely monitoring the situation.
The ongoing crisis in the Red Sea has not significantly affected the availability of containers for Indian traders, and the government is closely monitoring the situation, informed Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Anupriya Patel in Parliament on Friday.

Exports Unaffected, Rerouted via Cape of Good Hope
Patel stated that Indian exports continue uninterrupted, with container ships rerouted through the Cape of Good Hope route, encircling Africa, to avoid the troubled Red Sea.
Minimal Impact on Container Availability
The minister assured that the Red Sea crisis has had minimal impact on container availability in most Indian ports, as per her written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
Crisis Origin: Houthi Rebel Attacks
The Red Sea shipping route crisis emerged when Yemen-based Houthi rebels launched frequent attacks on commercial vessels in November 2023, following the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that began in early October 2023.
Global Supply Chains Disrupted
The crisis disrupted global supply chains, as the Red Sea is one of the world's busiest shipping routes, forcing vessels to take longer routes for exports and imports.
Enhanced Maritime Surveillance by Indian Navy
Patel highlighted the Indian Navy's efforts to enhance maritime surveillance in the central/north Arabian Sea, deploying long-range maritime patrol aircraft and Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAs) for comprehensive maritime domain awareness.
Close Coordination with Coast Guard
The minister emphasized that the Indian Navy is working closely with the Coast Guard to ensure effective surveillance of India's exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
Freight Cost Increase Reported
In response to another query, Patel acknowledged reports of some increase in freight costs by the industry.
Copper Imports Surge Attributed to Economic Growth
Addressing a separate question, Patel explained that the recent surge in copper imports into India is primarily due to increased demand driven by rapid economic growth, infrastructure development, and the transition to green energy, including renewable energy and electric vehicles.
Multifaceted Impact on Indian Industry
The minister noted that the impact of copper imports on Indian industry and the ease of doing business is multifaceted, influenced by various factors such as industry dynamics, regulatory environment, government policies, and supply chain resilience.
Government Measures to Boost Domestic Copper Availability
Patel outlined government initiatives to enhance domestic availability of copper mineral and reduce imports. These include encouraging exploration of critical minerals, including copper, under the Mines and Minerals Development and Regulation Amendment Act, 2023, to attract new technology, expertise, and investment in the mining sector.
Sterlite Copper Plant Closure Case in Supreme Court
Regarding the closure of the Sterlite Copper plant in Tuticorin, Patel informed that the matter is currently sub-judice in the Honorable Supreme Court.
Impact of Tuticorin Smelter Plant Closure
Patel acknowledged that the closure of Vedanta's Tuticorin smelter plant in Tamil Nadu has affected domestic production of refined copper. However, she attributed the recent surge in copper imports to increased demand in copper refining, reflecting a post-pandemic recovery, particularly in sectors like infrastructure, construction, telecom, electrical, renewable energy, and electric vehicles.
Environmental Concerns and Court Case
The minister explained that the Tamil Nadu government ordered the plant's closure in May 2018 due to environmental concerns and public safety risks. The matter is currently being heard in the Honorable Supreme Court.
