In view of the voluntary vehicle scrappage policy announced in Budget 2021, transport ministry has come up with the proposal of de-registration of government vehicles after 15 years. This is to discourage older vehicle from plying on roads.

On Friday the ministry of road transport and highways released a draft notification, proposing that registration of vehicles owned by Central government, State or Union Territory governments, local government institutions, PSUs, State transport undertakings, autonomous bodies linked to central or State governments, will not be renewed after 15 years.
Further the ministry has called for advice and objections on the policy, which is to come into effect from April 1, 2022, over a period of one month. Nitin Gadkari, Union transport minister gave an approval on the measure in January this year, pushing for scrappage of older vehicles and their replacement with eco-friendly and technologically improved vehicles.
Nirmala Sitharaman later in February announced the much-awaited vehicle scrappage policy as part of the Budget 2021.
The policy will help combat vehicular pollution, besides bringing down India's fuel import bill, Sitharaman had said.
Further as per the ET report, in accordance with the terms of the policy, strict fitness norms and not vehicle's age shall decide whether or not the vehicle should be junked.
And over the next few weeks, various notifications concerning vehicle scrapping centres, revised vehicle re-registration and fitness test charges and fitness rules that will decide on whether the vehicle should be scrapped are likely to be released.
For commercial vehicles, fitness renewal tests that it to be performed every two year for the first eight years, and post that period after every year will see a considerable traction. In case of private vehicles, re-registration is needed after 15 years once a fitness test is conducted.
